Welcome, Guest

  1.
Pretty quiet in here so I thought I'd get an early jump on my next show thread.

Who's in? Mr & Mrs tous I hope......anyone else? Hopng that Kevin can make this one plus a few other friends. Me and tangled will be there with dancin' shoes on. We'll try to get Jack along and of course, some kind of recording equipment.

That sure was a lot of driving for the band this past week down South. Remembering the drive up from NYC for them the last time, I hope they get an early jump.....won't be Friday afternoon traffic though.

There's a nice steakhouse literally right down the street from the venue. Can't remember the name but it's on the same side of the street towards town about 100yds away. We got a really nice meal there last time so it might be a good, quiet meet up spot before the gig if anyone gets into town early~

    To quote Shane....YAAAAAAAAAARN!!!
  2.
    Hey Reckless,

Thanks for the quote, hopefully one day we can get the whole crowd yelling YAAAAAAAAAAAAARN!!! That would sure sound sweet. Also, I would like to give a big virtual hug to all the Yarn friends who are participating on this site. You are all truly the best. And we really appreciate all your support.

    Love,
    Shane
  3.
Can't make Bank Street mister? We'll miss ya and I'll be sure to give a big YAAAARN yell in your honor!
  4.
I would like to make Bank Street but not sure
  5.
Well try your best man....and you gotta hear this Manchester show. I'm gonna burn a shitload of copies this week and bring 'em along to New London....I'll be sure someone gets one to you.

I'd drive 3 hours to Bank St. just to get a copy of that Manchester show! Luckily we're 10 minutes away. Hopefully my music writer pal at our paper comes though and gives the show a plug. As for eats, New London has a few good ones. I don't think the cafe itself has hired a new cook yet so you'd be better off elsewhere. On the same street but going back towards New London (on the right as you're looking at the club) :

Chesters Barbecue is on the same side as the cafe on Bank St. Small place but great bbq.
Hot Rods is just a little further down and has the best wings anywhere. Period. He's also just started offering slow roasted prime rib.
In the same block as Hot Rods (just before it) is the Steak Out which is fairly new owners and probably the place Reckless ate at.
Just after Hot Rods is Devs on Bank St. Great reputation but I've never eaten there myself.
More at the end of Bank St. right in New London is the Bulkeley House that has a giant open deck with an outdoor bar and pretty good food. Historic old building for inside seating. They draw a big bar crowd but the food is very good.
Just around the corner on State St. is Zavala's for some nouveau Mexican. Very good as well.
See, we like to eat and drink in New London!

    YAAAARRRNNNN !!!!!!

PS...any questions about the area, directions, etc...don't hesitate to ask.
  6.
Well you'll just have to pick one for us tous! I like the quietness of the Steak Out and the food was excellent but if you think there's a better place, that's cool too.

If the vote is steak, then the Steak Out would be the place. If it's cheap ($$) bar food (wings) and a bar atmosphere, it's Hot Rods. Both places are walking distance so the logistics are easier.

Ok, there's a weekly e-mail sent out by a local musician touting what's happening in the area "alt-country" wise and he included a plug for Yarn that I wrote. At a coffee shop about a mile away there's a "Sinners Circle" singer/songwriter in-the-round that starts at 8. Hopefully those folks come on over after.

Yarn also got a mention in our weekend entertainment section of the paper today. No interview, but a cool write-up and picture.

Great job tous, thanks for doing all of that.

We're looking to get into town around 5-6ish for eats and such so you make the call on where....doesn't really matter to us.

On balance, Steak Out would be the best bet to relax and get a good meal. What time do you want to meet? I imagine show starts about 10 ?
  8.

how about meeting at hotrods since we tried the steak out last time, we'll eat our way through new london ;)
    6:30-7 ok?

(((SHANE))) head north and take a right !
  9.
just re-read this again and hoping that i didn't just screw up the plan. sorry.

I'm partial to Hot Rod's wings so that would be great!

    7PM ... see you then !
  10.
    wings it is . . .
  11.
thanks yarn for another awesome show !

great music & great company, not a lot of crowd but the crowd that was there,
thoroughly enjoyed the music and everyone was very attentive.
the recording sounds great, looking forward to hearing the 'on the road' & 'louann'
again when we get it all transferred.

thanks tous and mrs. tous, looking forward to the next time.

it was a pleasure as always Shane, glad you made the trip.

my days of being a pretend waitress are over for you guys though,
not sure if you noticed last night at the wing place, after i left your table, some dude said
"excuse me, could i get a fork" and i said
"i'm not a real waitress, i just play one on tv" and he just looked at me and said,
"can you still get me a fork"
    so i said "ummm . . . no"
    needless to say i didn't get a tip ;)

lotsa love out to each of you,
till albany red square, i'll stay . . . tangled up in yarn ;)
  12.
got a chance to listen to some of the show on the big speakers today. sounds really nice.

'on the road' is as gorgeous as i thought. you can hear nothing but the band during the quietest parts of the song, no talking,
no yelling, not even a clink of a glass, bravo to everyone at bank street and bravo to yarn for captivating us all into silence !

Great to hear the recording came out well ! I didn't think it would top 9/11 Manchester and it didn't (smaller crowd) but I'd give it an 8 out of 10. New stuff sounded great and I heard Rickey B. tell Reckless about a Jan 5th release date for the new one ? The way Blake is writing songs these days it could easily be a double-disc!

Great to see you guys again! We probably won't make Albany but Sullivan Hall is looking more and more like a go!
  13.
I think the record release info was more general but yes, sometime after New Year. Great to see you guys again tous~

So the DAT deck I run actually belongs to my buddy Jack....Jack who rescued us and brought us to Lake George. He left the gear for me at his house as he was away and I picked it up in the morning. Fortunately, before we left for New London, I decided to organize the taping case which I never bother to do. Guess what wasn't in there. The deck itself was still sitting on a shelf at his house so back to town we went to get the deck. I would have been very disappointed to not record this show so thankfully I didn't open the case at Bank Street.

Arrived a tad late at Hot Rod's to meet up with Mr & mrs tous for some eats pre show. Had plenty of time though and I was able to snag the center position to tape even though as I said, Bank Street's a tough hall. The recording came out very well and I'm quite pleased with it. A small but attentive crowd formed and there was none of the obnoxious chatter that plagued the last show there.

    Set List:

    Strikes & Gutters
    Nothing But Time
    Down On Your Luck
    Schenectady
    Christopher Street
    Abeline
    Listen Up Sweetheart
    Woman On The Interstate
    This Whole Zoo
    On The Road
    I Gotta Go

    Set 2:

    Alone On The Weekend
    NYC Found
    Hard Luck Man
    Lou Ann
    Music's Only Outlaw
    No Future Together
I Wanna Be Neil Young (Shane Spaulding)

Just another fantastic evening of playing....not a whole lot else to say. I was told that On The Road has been around a while but it was the first time for me and it's splendid; one of the reason's I'm so glad I caught a good snag of this show. Lou Ann as well is another instant Yarn classic. Beautiful harmonies and strings~

Hard Luck Man has come a ways since I first heard it this summer and I'm liking it more. The Down On Your Luck featured a terrific solo intro from Rick and Blake sang some special "Nighttrain" lyrics during Don't Break My Heart:

    oh he's on a nighttrain...he's on a nighttrain.....repeat
Oh he's a West coast strut
    one bad mother
got a rattlesnack suitcase under his arm
Oh he's a lean machine, drinking gasoline
and honey, you can make his motor run
    he's on the nighttrain...repeat

It was great that Shane could make the trip and we got to hang a bit. A nice uneventful ride had us home just after 3pm. Thanks Yarn and all ya'll Yarn family~

    On deck- Albany 10/23~

Sounds like a killer another show. Yarn is like a fine wine and just gets better with age. I have yet to hear Strikes & Gutters, Schenectady, This Whole Zoo, One The Road, Hard Luck Man & Lou Ann in concert. Some of them I have heard on Boots. I am sure in due time I will hear all of them. Maybe Nov 6th will be the night. Then again any Yarn song new or old works for me. I will take whatever I can get. I have heard Neil young at every single NYC show I have gone to and I love it every time. It's such a fun get silly song. The new songs are making my mouth water. I can't wait to hear them. I also love it when bands insert other songs into there songs. The Counting Crows due that all the time.

I first on the road on a boot I got off of the archive. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but I believe that song has been around since 07. The intro notes remind me of Name from the Goo Goo Dolls. One day Yarn will be the biggest band in America and not have to worry about people showing up to a gig.
  14.
    .....fight for the front row
stick around to the end of the show~

Wow, I'm really liking this 10/3 recording......very sweet sound. On The Road is just a stunningly beautiful song.

erlbany, I got the envelope back from Rick and have stuff almost set to go....sorry for all the promises but I want to try to drag out & copy the Canal Street show for you. I don't listen to it much because it's really crowdy....chatty crowdy, not good crowdy....but I know you'll want it 'cause you were there. I have lots of otehr goodies tossed in too. I promise to mail it this week!

Damn, Reckless. I've got a backlog of other bands/shows to listen to like you wouldn't believe. Now with this just GREAT sounding show looks like I'll be pressing "repeat" a lot and falling farther behind! Thanks a lot! Awesome job. Nothing is buried in the mix at all...and I know what a tough room that is to tape in. Just wow.
  16.
tous, i've been listening to track 10, disk 1 of the Bank Street show on repeat.
i just love that song, 'on the road'. i really enjoy the slow steady start leading to the
crashing rock, back to slow & super quiet (no it won't . . . and it can't fade away) and then
back again. is there a musical term for that, aside from awesomeness !?
i bet 'restless companion" has been listening to this show whilst standing in the middle of the
raging river trying to catch the biggest brown trout evah ;) good luck and godspeed !

be well everyone, enjoy the crisp sunny autumn day.

I love everything about on the road. It's a killer tune. It's been on repeat in my car since I got it in the mail.
  17.
Bump...hey tous, did this ever get put up at archive? I was listening to Lou Ann today and it was quick to search the date here and I don't see it linked.

I have only this one copy of Lou Ann and it still blows me away the way Yarn's so prolific that they can toss aside songs of this quality.

Looking forward to hearing that On The Road... the one they played in Hickory a few weeks ago was my favorite so far.. .Andrew laying on the ground while he was playing, was just sick.. I am sure Brouche's favorite one was the one played in his living room.
  19.
There was about 20 people in the place and all were listening. I had never heard the song and I remember me and tous just picking our jaws up off the floor....remember tous?

OTR is one of my all time favorite Yarn songs. My 1st time was at the 1st Yarn ball. I love how it starts out slow and sad and then just takes off. Then you think it's over and as the vocals begin to fade out the band comes back in and kicks it into overdrive.
  20.
    Looking forward to it!

OK RC... thanks for giving me something to listen to tonight. That OTR is definitely insane. The recording is quite amazing as well. Thanks for sharing, I am downloading it now. I call this one and the recent Hickory one a toss up. I like the less chattiness in this recording, I liked the fact that I was at the Hickory one and had requested it earlier in the day and man did they deliver.

Gosh not to mention the MOO is UNREAL!!!!
  21.
Well you know the thing to say is simply that we've never heard a bad On The Road...seems to be one they hit outta the park every time. I remember after that one, I wasn't sure if it was an original or a cover. Was quite pleased to learn the former and beyond that, isn't a bit of a creed for us here at 5guitars? We all fight for the front row, stick around til the end of the show and buy 'em a drink to let 'em know, right?

One more comment...this Lou Ann is when it really struck me how much Andrew reminded me of Jerry. The song is nothing like a Grateful Dead song nor is Andrew tuned similarly, he just hits some phrasing there that just demands a perma-grin. That's the similar part.
  22.
Listening right now - great recording, RC, and the boys sound great as usual! Loved Andrew's divine inspiration during Abeline, OTR, and Lou Ann! What a great show to get lost in! (Fucking Yarn :)
