That Music's Only Outlaw from the Manchester DVD sure goes out there compared to the studio version. Andrew just riiips that one up. Some of Kev's friends are going tonight. Should be agreat show as there's nobody warming up so it'll be all Yarn~
Lies I've told Empty Pockets Don't break my heart again & You don't love me anymore
The above have been played about twice as often as the other songs on my itunes... however i second reckless companion's motion, each and every song stirs my soul :)
I love all the songs, but any song where Andrew is given space to let his "soul shine" is my favorite. His playing takes me to outerspace in the way Trey, Warren, Jerry and Derek can. He is really passionate and absorbing to watch, cant get enough dancing to his playing.
Since I am relatively new I am going to add a few here, the hard part is keeping the list short. Don't Break My Heart Again Abilene Tired of Everything Almost Home On the Road New York City Found
I could go on for awhile and the list probably changes every few days but this is my current feeling.
I'm with earlb and tous, it keeps changing and whatever they play next
Here's my current list:
DBMHA Desperate Amy Bring me Down (studio version especially) Abilene It's all over Now These bars don't look too friendly Time Burns on Final Bow Strikes and gutters Lonely Old man (Southern Rock song) and most recently, Shine a light on
"Shine a light on" is tremendous, it's a happy, funny, hopeful, religious ?, and an audience participation song !!
Oh man- that' a tough one - in no particular order ... Strikes & Gutters Musics Only Outlaw - esp. when it's really jammy ;) Shine a Light On On the Road Desperate Amy Empty Pockets Abilene
Maybe You're Mine Along The Way When The Summer Ends That's Just Fine
...The Dirt Road is still on the list but I gotta say, I'm not necessarily sold on where this one's progressed to. Check out this one, according to Blake's intro, the first one played: http://www.archive.org/details/Yarn2011-05-20 It's slinky and mysterious with a tad of Rod's late psychedelia later on. It builds up not before holding a few moments in time. Blake wasn't ready with the "wholes and dealers" line so both use "more of the same" but instrumentally, it's just silly.
On 6/18/11, Blake again remarks that this is the second time played and that it "felt a little better" than the previous time http://www.archive.org/details/Yarn2011-06-18 It seemed more polished to me but it didn't imo, best the first one. It was missing some of its edgyness.
.....that first one was so slow and slinky with killer riffs and Rod bringing psycedelics. It's still a good song in any tempo but I sure wish the guys would consider WWJD? ...which means of course, what would Jerry do? Slow that sucker back down boys; we ain't goin' anywhere ;)
I agree with you RC. I like the slow version better than the up tempo one. Much the same way I like the slower version of Can't Slow Down. My two favorite versions of Dirt Road are 4: http://www.archive.org/details/yarn2011-06-25.CA-14 and the one he did with Andrew's band, the first time he played it live: http://www.archive.org/details/AHB2011-05-16 . Have a good week peeps.
I dunno gang - I actually like uptempo version best! I feel like the driving tempo matches the lyrics better - restless soul, on a relentless, desperate search... Plus I like that tempo going into the jams. BUT I do agree with tous' earlier comment about the slow version of Can't Slow Down - love the groove there!
And I'm not even going to try to pick a short list of favs... that would be way too hard! :)
