Can't wait to return to the scene of the crime where I stumbled into a pub not knowing a thing about Yarn last April. Just for kicks, I grabbed a lenghty post that I wrote the very next day at another site:
"Well Yarn, wow, no shit.
let's see.....we had e-mailed about taping so we had contacted Blake previously but meeting him before the show was great. He invited me to run my video camera as well. I told him and Trevor that we were first timers, big into Ryan Adams and since our boy is on a hiatus, we needed a new band. Ha ha, he said jump onto Yarn man!
Then I got to really chat for a spell with Andrew, the mandolinist. What a remarkable guy. We talked about Ryan and Whiskeytown and of course, that Caitlan had sat in with them. He said that Stranger's Almanac had just gripped him and that his biggest inspiration came from Jerry. He got to see Jerry a dozen times or so though he was very young. We remarked about Jerry's centeredness. Little did I know that I was speaking with the true engine of the band. Blake's got the wheel but Andrew makes the engine turn. I asked him about the band name and he just said it's about a yarn man, telling a tale, spinning a yarn. He had a dream where he saw it on a marqee and when they were talking band names, that one stuck. Simple and organic, I told him I think it's splendid.
What a cramp trying to get gear set up. This place is just a pub with no sight lines at all and I couldn't get any ac power hook up from our table. Finally, between bands I introduced myself to some nice folks who let me set up just off the side of the band. I had ac and clear lines with nobody in the way. I shot the entire 2+hr show in a beautiful video capture. I showed a quick snippet to Andrew after the show and he was very excited to see such HQ video. He wants us to get it up and spread it around so we will certainly do that. I want EVERYONE at this site to have a copy and to come out and support this band so we'll torrent it here before too long. Funky was plugged into the board but we don't know if that came out well just yet. The audio on my master tape sounds fantastic anyway but we'll see what we can do to make it really good if we can. Funky did run out of battery life on his recorder near the end.
This band just has it all folks. The harmonies are really sweet. When Trevor backs up Blake it's just such a beautiful tone. They have really good songs and a terrific flow of instrumentation. As I said, Blake's the man but when Andrew lets it riiiip, watch out. Speed in aces and a tone control and quality that's really impressive.....and they don't have him leading on every song which is refreshing.......I'm looking at you Trey....and by the time he cuts into a song, the whole thing has been first set up by the band. Percussion was outstanding with drummer Joe Frederick and bass player Rick Bugle on acoustic stand up. Got a great solo from him on video.
Blake made a few call outs to the tapers who he so appreciates and then get this, he gives us a nod and says this one's for the tapers....he and Trevor break into a beautiful Oh My Sweet Carolina. It was just wonderful to hear and they really did a fine job with it so thanks Blake~
A terrific romp through their catalog and we were left very impressed. Great to talk with Andrew again after the show. He told me how really hard it is for them trying to turn a little coin on the road. It just amazes me that folks shell out such big $$$ to see these classic bands milk their old songs....I'm looking at you The Dead...and that a band as vibrant as this has to struggle. One cannot I believe, be a Ryan Adams fan and not like Yarn. The similarities to Whiskeytown are there. When we arrived home, I plugged the show in and Funk and me watched most of it all over again until about 5am. Just stunned with how good these guys are and at how nice my footage came out.
So that's that. Yarn has won us over and we're gonna keep an eye out for whenever they come near. Again, we'll torrent this video and if anyone's not able to grab it, just shoot me an e-mail/PM and I'll be sure you get a copy.
Yarn, indeed~whew."
Ha Ha, for my National Service Project for 9/11 I'm gonna go see Yarn, how about you? ;)
glad you had a good time, RC...hope all is well with the family...hugs to the Mrs....I miss her.
I would have loved to hear Oh My Sweet Carolina..it must have been beautiful.
Oh...for my National Service Project for 9/11 I'm renewing my vows in Vegas...for my 25th wedding anniversary. Did I mention I'm getting re-married by Elvis? ;)
Hey Reckless....we're the "nice folks" who let you set up at our table. Bob & Candy. You were the nice guy that gave us copies of the DVD and more stuff at the New London show. We will be there psyched as can be!
You know, I really don't know where to start on this one to try to put as much FUN as I had last night into words. Surrounded by lots of friends new and past while Yarn jammed out the longest and likely the best show I've seen out of 8 of them leaves me with that 'ol perma-grin that will last a week.
Jack, tangled and me set out...running late as usual and on the way I finally thought to call my old college buddies Rob and Dave who live close to the venue. Fortunately the late notice wasn't a problem and they could both make their first show (although I'm in trouble with Rob's wife 'cause she had to sit their son..doh!). Another dear friend Marci from way back also came so tangled had a girlfriend to dance with. Mr and Mrs tous were there and so was Bev again. Also got to meet and chat with new 5G member sand and on top of that, just about everyone in attendance was refreshingly there to see/hear Yarn and the usual crowdy chatter was absent....whew!
I'll have to go back through the recording to get an accurate setlist 'cause I'm def forgetting quite a few....the DAT tape ran out to 2:50! There were three tapers total and our recording came out superb~

Standin' (Townes Van Zandt) Schenectady Abeline Down On Your Luck Lies I've Told Music's Only Outlaw Don't Worry 'Bout Me (((Rickey B!!!!!)))...it was a BIG night for the B man! Cat & Mouse
....help me out tous! ;)
So ever since the Bank Street show back on 7/31, I've listened to Schenectady, Strikes & Gutters and Wanted To Get High every single day....literally so I was of course psyched to get all three last night. Esp pleased to hear the evolving take on Strikes & Gutters. The Bank Street version had Adrew goin' all sorts of Jerry while last night was a more rocking effort.
Ok tous, back me up on this one. The Abeline was by far the most out-there and sonically interesting version I've heard. After this recording gets out, if anyone knows of a finer version I'd really appreciate getting steered toward it. I was just wowed by this one. The other wow out-there version came with the Music's Only Outlaw. That too stretched out to all sorts of sonic silliness. I mean, it always does but this was just different than any I've heard.
Simply put, Yarn was on top of their game last night and everyone in the room was grinnin' and groovin'. They didn't end until 1:30am and they didn't leave anyone disappointed. My friends Dave and Rob were very impressed and I'm certain we'll see them again...esp if this Manchester gig becomes a regular thing.
So Yarn and everyone else, thanks for a truly unforgettable night of music~ Jay, we missed you brother....no sax :(
Amazing show. It was like a private fan show with shout-outs from Blake to 5guitars (dot ORG!), Reckless Companion and John himself. Crowd was way into them and carried the day with a couple sing-alongs. Blake was *clearly* having a "Ten-high" great time.
At the end of "Don't Break My Heart Again" (at least I *think* that's when it was) he looks up, sees the crowd and says "oh, you guys still here?". Got lost in his music a few times (as did we).
Abilene was awesome as Reckless says.
Also played This Whole Zoo, Alone on the Weekend, NYC Found and Woman On The Interstate (HO!).
One of those shows where you walk out grinnin' and you can't think of anything they *didn't* do !
Particularly on their games were Jay, Rick and Rod. Well, Andrew as well. Ok, Blake and Trevor too.
Just a fun, fun show.
Keep spreadin' the word, folks. These guys deserve it.
.....and yeah, my stickers were kind of a hit huh? Standing offer to anyone who'd like a YRN euro sticker. E-mail me a mailing addy and I'll send it along~
...and Yodel, drop me an addy and I'll mail you a couple copies of the DVD you asked about....or I could bring extras to the 10/3 show...your call.
John is good people. My pleasure, It's been a long time since I've had the desire to take a real interest in a band. These guys really have "it" if you know what I mean.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm part of the Max Creek family too....long time deadhead. Started taping Jerry in '93 and then after 8/9/95 :( went on to the Allmans and lots of Dylan shows. Then a sundry of artists from Bela to Martin Sexton and such. Got into Ryan Adams in '05 and really dug that scene for a long time but then Ryan kinda went to mush and now he's on hiatus.
....as stated up above, I wandered into the Pub in April of this year and left going wow, no shit. Here's something really special going on~
So again, sweet to have ya aboard and let's keep this taping network growing. As always, us tapers are very appreciative of the band's generosity. Did you snag any of my DVDs off of dime? If not, shoot me an addy and I'll hook you up.
...yo Johnny D, how'd your recording turn out? Would love to hear it. Jack said you were into the board too? Boy, a matrix of this one would be beyond sweet.
virgin poster here. eew it feels soooooo good. sorry to be a slacker. both recordings alone a so so . Believe the matrix will kick it way up. Sound there was not as good as I would say it normally is. My first yarn experience was truly great. I love jams and jamming music thanks johnD
Awesomeness but wait till you see the taping nightmare that is the Bank Street Pub! It's real tough in there with the main speaker bank all to the right tucked into the stage side of the bar. Real nice sound guy but I didn't ask about board access last time so maybe you could explore that route if you make it down~
Well my buddy Jack finally got this one mastered for us.
I sat downstairs in my boy's room den and listened to the entire thing start to finish last evening and I officially declare this show as the best Yarn show I've attended and may I dare venture to suggest that it's well among the best they've ever played? I know that's saying a lot but truly, this one will go down in Yarn lore in years to come. Even the nod to 9/11 found the whole place taking a moment of silence that was unforced and uncalled for..it just happened. Terrific synergy between audience and band that raised the bar very high.....Ten High in fact!

Epic versions of all the songs esp Abeline that stretched out to 13 minutes. tous, that moment when Blake "came to" and proclaimed "you're still here?" was right after the Abeline. Then someone shouted out for Music's Only Outlaw and he said "Oh man, I can't get lost twice in a row!"
I know Johnd said the sound wasn't great but man does this recording sound fantastic...he may be more of an audiophile than me though as I plug my ipod into my car deck ;) Still, this one has the good kind of crowd noise where everyone's amazed at the playing and right on board with the sing-along and crowd parts. It just felt like the whole place was really focused in on the stage and Blake even made a remark as such at one point. The Don't Break went to 14 minutes while the Music's Only went out to 19! Both with some sick playing and alternative arrangements. It took three cds to fit it all. Yarn at the top of their game~
I'm gonna make a shitload of copies tomorrow and then I'll get those packages sent out.
Holy shit what a band this is~ have I said that before? ;)
Check this out? The Counting Crows are playing a FREE show in Central Park tonight and I don't feel like going unless Yarn was going to be there. Right now musically speaking it’s all about Yarn. They are hands down the greatest band ever. I am still on such a high from the last Yarn show that I know the Crows will not be able to top it tonight. Plus they are only play a 30 minute show.
The 13 minute version of Abeline must be killer. The 9/10 version is insane. Andrew takes off onto the highway and shreds on his electric mandolin then the bands jams as good if not better then the Dead. Abeline gets better and better with each listen. Sometimes when I listen to that song I get the feeling like I am sitting around the campfire and other times I feel like I am cruising down the highway with the top down on an endless road trip.
I second the Holy shit what a band this is. lol You can never say it to many times. lol It's so true.
Whatever IT is they have it and then some.
The new album is going to blow the other 2 killer albums out of the water.
Thanks for posting this! Do me a favor though, need you and Reckless to be at Sullivan Hall next Fri. to tape that show as well. What great sound on both of your recordings!
Did just now see the Worcester date tous. I assume you guys will make that one, no? Bummer that it's so late on a week night but I still have two personal days at work so I'm pretty much counting on that one.
Tammany Hall-saw hot day at the zoo there last night. home at 2.45 am. slept in to 5.31 and am out the door now. naptime-12 to.........I liked the venue.
Your source is up on internet archive buddy. lemme know if you need any changes or additions. Sounds good man. I do believe thats the first time I've heard Neumann 4071 guns, really warm sound. If you get a chance, shoot me an email sometime and we can chat a bit.
I tried to copy the 8/8/09 Burlington show for you but my buddy let his standalone run to the end and it gives me a target overload prompt. Did Andrew give you that one yet? I can just send along the copy that I have.
I do have the others to send along and will do it soon.
Ya, just caught that and that there are a few intros tracked out. It's re deriving now, should be good in a 5 to 10 ;-)
Reckless, send me whatever you want man, that goes to anyone who tapes/has yarn sources they want up to etree. Andrew emailed today that he sent another show, not sure which though.
Got 3 Yarn shows in the next month and a half, Philly, PA, Harrisburg, PA, and My home town here Williamsport, PA. Just picked up some Joesphson C42MP mics and a sound device Mix/Pre to run into my edirol r-09HR. I think I might them run along with the nak shotguns and super omni > nak MX100 mixer > tascam hd-p2. Hoping to run a few rigs for a few sources and also possibly combine them all to make a 5 mic source, should be fun (sorry, I love new toys so I have to blurt out nerd talk somewhere when I get them lol, excuse the hijack ).
