P.J. Kelly's was a small bar in the middle of West Virginia that was "wild and wonderful" indeed. The smoking ordinance wasn't enforced and most of the bar was smoking. As an ex-smoker, it is pretty hard to be around smoking and the amount of second hand smoke was obnoxious. I could still smell the smoke on my clothes the next day and I am airing out my equipment from the smell. Tapernate and I clamped to a table in the middle about 20 feet from the stacks. The stage was in a small room with the board built into the bar and maybe 50 feet between the stage and the bar. I think this maybe the smallest room I've seen Yarn. The adjoining room was quite large with a pool table and a large bar. The crowd was pretty raucous. One person kept bragging to the people around us how he was going to steal tapernate's crutches. Another that tapernate nicknamed claptard kept dancing into our table and then apologizing. When he came up with the bright idea to move closer to the stage because he realized that he was bumping the euipmentYarn was a big draw, but many people in the other room seemed they were out to party and not paying attention to the band.

Still, the boys played well and I refuse to dwell on the negatives. The Christopher Street was the best song of the night IMO. It was great seeing Nick and Jen.

The next part of the story was a special anniversary for me. As I was leaving for 10-29-10 Night Cat show, my doctor called with the results of my first check up in years. My blood test revealed that I had type 2 diabetes. My blood sugar was at 211 mg/dl (normal is below 100 mg/dl and diabetes begins around 130. My AC1 test results were 8.5. The goal is to be below 6.5. I was so devastated I almost didn't go, but I had agreed to tape and went to get my mind off the matter though I was shocked emotionally for the entire evening. The next time I saw Yarn was at the Otter House. Blake sat by me as I set my gear up to tape and we caught up. I told Blake about my condition and that I was working towards making the lifestyle changes, but it was a real bitch and I was still anxious at times. Later in the show, Blake told the audience "and for God sakes buy this beautiful man Jeff Prater a tequila, too. He needs something" Pretty cool. The next show for me was the Otter House on 2-25-11. Blake came back as I was setting up my video camera in the back and preparing the mics for an onstage recording. He did a double take and told me how good I looked. I had lost thirty-five pounds at that point dropping the blood sugar to 119 mg/dl and AC1 to 5.9. Blake went over to prepare the merchandise for sell and we continued our conversation. I could never fit into the shirts Yarn sold since the largest size they carried was a single XL. That night, I finally could fit into one of those shirts and bought one. At every show since, Blake always tells me how good I look. I've been able to keep off the weight for the past year and have been able to control the diabetes with diet and exercise. Hopefully I can stay off the meds after the doctor's visit next week. Anyways, at this show I celebrated the anniversary of finally being able to fit into a Yarn shirt. Just don't tell my doc about the five gin and tonics I had that evening.

Great stuff Jeff, thanks for sharing and WAY TO GO with the diet and diabeties. Keep on rockin' bro~

That really is an inspirational story, Jeff! I am always so impressed when people opt for changing habits first rather than going for the quick fix - it's definitely the harder path at first, but you reap benefits that the meds can't give you. Congratulations on your milestone anniversary and thanks for sharing it with us!

Congrats on the milestone Jeff. In NY you can't smoke anywhere. I love clean air. My Nanna used to have a cig in each hand. She died when I was 5 from lung cancer. It scared for life and I never smoked. I need to get back in shape. I am such a lazy bum. Once the wather warms up I will start running and riding my bike. Great job on the recording as well.

Jeff, what a great story and really shows how the guys in the band really do care about their fans. There is another one among us who has also done a great job at trimming some lbs over the past few months. I almost hardly recognize him when I do see him. Way to go hopped, you are an inspiration to me.

Way to go, hopped! Good for you! Does this mean we're buying you Mich Ultras now? ;)

Way to go Jeff! Weight loss is not easy I have found. But it is very rewarding. My wife changed her diet recently and she is no longer running to the doc for a scrip for her ailment of the week.

I have changed my diet and exercise routines. I feel great. Brouche can testify that I still drink the high calorie suds, though. I just have to work harder to counteract it. You will never see me drinking a Mich Ultra.

Re the high calorie suds - I'm with you on that! It's just malt-flavored fizzy water :)

Thanks everyone! Yes, hoppedup, weight is not easy. I never thought I would enjoy running and I hope to drop more this summer since I've plateaued for a little while. My doc recommended switching to the paleo diet, which is pretty much lean meats and vegetables, no grains. Don't miss dairy or grains though I thought I would. When I do cheat it's definitely not with a mich ultra--yuck! On Dead tour, we used to joke that you could tell the tapers in the crowd since they had the pot bellies, the result of being crammed into one stadium seat and having all your recording gear at your feet so you couldn't dance.

Pot bellies perhaps but the kindest buds were always under the mics!!!

oh yeah, buds. I remember...well sort of! LOL
