I know I am late to the party but god dam is he good. I finally got around to listening to him and his previous band Sunday Valley. Sturgill is the real deal. He would make a great co headline with Yarn. Thoughts?
Sturgill is blowing up huge. Yarn would be very lucky to get a gig opening for him. His small venue days are over when this current tour is done. I saw him open for Jason Isbell at a 2700 seat venue and Jason even said that Sturgill wouldn't be opening for him anymore. It will be the other way around. He sold out the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh months in advance. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a change in venue for that one.
Last night my buddy David and I headed to Brooklyn to catch Sturgill and his band do their thing. We got to the venue with 10 minutes to spare. My friend David is in his 60's and had both hips replaced. After talking to the security guard we got hooked up. We cut the whole line which went all the way down the block. He let us in early to get a seat up stairs. I am still on a music high. Despite being sick Sturgill put on a hell of a show. My friend David said as great as Sturgill was he thought Yarn was still on a whole nother level. Yarn + Sturgill would be a great double bill. This was my 1st time seeing Sturgill. I have all his albums but I went into the show blind. I cut my self off and did not listen to Sturgill for a while to help build up the craving. I did not want to cheat and know what his live show was like. Some songs were 3 minutes and other songs were much longer. They did not Jam out songs as long as Yarn does but they let loose. His band looked like babies but sounded like old vets. BTW as I type this message I am listening to my recording and it sounds pretty good.
One of you told me that when this tour is over Sturgill is going to blow up. Whoever called it was dead on. Sturgill mentioned something at the show about coming back in March. I just got an email that said he's playing Carnignie Hall. He went from opening act to playing small clubs to playing Carnegie Hall over night. That's the big time. Ryan Adams just played that venue.
I checked the new album out and I love it. Sturgill totally reinvented himself. I love that he did not make Metamodern Sounds in Country Music Part 2. Yarn could easily pull off a Soul album with horns.
