Looking to head on up to the Yarn show tonight and hoping my son's flu doesn't keep us home. The poor tyke's real sick so one of us may have to stay home but maybe not. Pretty sure I'll make it at least and perhaps Jack can make it too. We'll run audio gear of course.
......you Yarn guys can find my suggested setlist in that other thread! ;)
Review and setlist to follow sometime this weekend~
Heya Ant...where ya been lately? Yup got to go...just as I had to leave, the 'lil guy took a turn for the better but tangled still had to stay home with him.
So me and Jack set off for Albany arriving as the band was doing an initial sound check. Hadn't been in the room for 2 minutes when I set the mic stand down so I didn't have to hold it. I was immediatley approached and scolded by sound guy for not asking permission! Cripes, we hadn't set up any gear at all and as I typed in the Burlington thread this summer, I always ask permission and certainly had intended to do so. Anyway, I apologized and handed him an extra copy of the DVD I shot there last time 'cause he was adamant that the club get a copy of anything recorded there. Didn't want any hassles so I told him I'd mail him a copy of tonight and also gave him a copy of bank Street 10/3.
The opening band Cabinet was excellent so that was nice 'cause a bad opener can be painful. Acoustic bass, mando, banjo, guitar and drums, they played a very enjoyable set even though the vocals were beyond muddy to where you couldn't make out a word. Funny, 'cause the soundcheck of Strikes & Gutters by Yarn sounded pretty decent.
Well something happened because when Yarn took the stage, they had to go through the entire soundcheck crap all over again. It was obviously frustrating for the band and when they started, it was also obvious that the issues hadn't been resolved. Trevor was waaaay down and everything was just dull. The guys did their best and jammed another great show but the sound quality made me want to go find sound dude and demand my discs back! It sucked. Near the halfway point, things got better or perhaps I just got used to it but by then, I had to dodge the growing crowd of drunks who could'nt give a shit about what band was playing. One big dude camped right under our mic stand and barked on and on at his girl some intense fucking argument. Finally, she had to text someone and couldn't get bars where we were so they left...Jesus H, just a tough night all around for trying to actually enjoy a Yarn show.
The guys played great as always but since it was a crowded drunk tank, they played mostly the standard rockers. They played the first version of Final Bow that I had heard later on and it was another splendid Yarn song. Looking forward to mastering the show just to have that. Maybe it'll sound better than I think. You never know as mics "listen" better than ears but overall, it was mostly a lesson in frustration for a true Yarn fan. Add that The Red Square is basically a pisshole and I'm not so sure I'd bother to go back. Depends on how bad of a Yarn fix I need!
I'll have to confirm the setlist after I hear the show but here's the best I can do from memory in some approximation of the actual order:
Christopher Street Listen Up Sweetheart Empty Pockets Schenectady Woman OnThe Interstate Alone on the Weekend New York City Found Bad Bad Man Can't Slow Down More Don't Break My Heart Again No Future Together Wanted To Get High Standin' This Whole Zoo Cat and Mouse Final Bow Lovelight
So not exactly a glowing review I know but it sucked to have to deal with all that shit. At the end I had moved up to the very front to avoid the chatters. I was literally 5 feet from the right speakers between Rod and Trevor...a little worried about the loudness as I've dealt with tinnitus before. Then, halfway through Lovelight a big fellow and his tall girl moved in front of me and while they were literally 3 feet in front of the speakers, they began to fucking SHOUT over the music. It was just the perfect ending to a shitty night ;)
Anyway, it was pretty packed so I hope the guys turned a little coin at least but it won't go down as a Reckless favorite and I hope they find someplace else to play in Albany.
I told the guys that I 'spect some date to pop up in southern New England before the end of the year 'cause I haven't gone more than a month without seeing Yarn since April! ;)
Thanks for the review Reckless. That sucks that show went down in flames all due to the drunks and the venue/sound guy. It’s one thing if you live down the street but you put in some good mileage just to get to the show. I hope the next show you attend turns out better. I was once at a GA show which I camped out all day for with friends. After finally making my way to the stage some big drunk biker chick whose name was probably large Marge or Bertha pushed me out of the way so she could get up front. I just put my hands up and let her walk right by me. I was not going to cause any trouble. Her beer spilled and then she stared me down with a dirty look. I did not think I was going to make it out of there alive. Everyone around me kept screaming for security. Finally they ran over and hauled her out of the show. Back to the show Final Bow is such a pretty song about the final show. Any show with Lovelight is a good show in my book. I hope the bands come through and plays another gig in southern New England before the end of the year
I was a few seconds away from bailing from work Friday at noon to come up and tape this. Sounds like I'm kinda glad I made the decision to stay and try for Sullivan hall. Sorry to hear about the hassles man, I can definitely feel your pain, taping in bars is always a challenge. More times than notaround here, the music is an after thought to folks that just wanna hang at the bars so I know this scenario all too well.
I've taped cabinet a few times this year. Good band and nice fellas. First time I taped them, they were actually kind enough to turn the PA so I could make a better tape :D
How far a drive is it for you bgreen? If Manchester, CT isn't too far, that place has become a very Yarn friendly venue lately with chill folks who dig the band.
I'll let y'all know how the Red Square tape came out when I hear it. Jack's gonna master it for us soon. After I get that I'm gonna mail it along with 10/3 and 8/8 off to bgreen to post....got your snail mail from Andrew. Hope Sullivan hall goes well for you~
if you ever need help with post production reckless, lemme know man. Always more than happy. We have a few tapers and a team of editors with our project.
Finally got this one mastered and as expected, it sounds better than it did at the club that night; just a tad crowdy. Sweet version of Final Bow. I'll start getting a package ready to go out to bgreen~
Finally getting to this. Actual selist for this one:
