This date is listed on Yarn's site but the venue's calendar has "Big Sam's Funky Nation" listed. Is Blake now calling himself 'Big Sam' or is one of the websites wrong?

I may actually try to make it up to this one if it's happening. Have some friends I've been meaning to visit in the city, sounds like a good excuse. :-)

    Thanks for the info.

I mentioned the following in another thread but figured I would post it over here as well. I am taking my buddy David to his first Yarn show. He’s is my musical inspiration. He has seen everyone in concert from the Dead who he’s seen over 300 times to Ryan Adams and everyone in between. He was front row at Woodstock and saw the Who destroy all there instruments from the side of a pool at a beach club on Long Island back in the 60’s. I can’t wait to see his face melt off.

we are gonna try to come up for this one. I'll have my gear. I had a few tapers bail on me for the last sullivan though. I guess there were some real issues with the new soundguy a few nights prior to. Something with the sound guy asking for $100 to patch to the board, then having security hassle the taper all night after they declined to pay and got permission from the venue to run from a stand. Hope that was a one time deal.

Question about the venue...looks like one long room with no tables/chairs, just standing room. How difficult is it to see/hear/enjoy if you're not right upfront?

It is indeed one long room with no tables/chairs except for a few bar stools up front all the way to the left on a small ledge. The last time I was there which was my first time Blake said the sound stunk from the stage. I was up front Andrew side sitting on a Bar stool on the little ledge they have. I did not spend that much time in the back of the palce to hear the sound. From where I was it was fine by me. I have heard better and I have heard worse. I am shorty so no matter where I stand or what venue I am in I can't see. There was however a whole lot of talking going on during Yarn's set. I should bring a sign like they use in golf to make sure that everyone is quite. lol I hate when people come to talk and not care about the music.

For whoever is going and/or in the area, if you can make it Thurs the 5th, Girls, Guns & Glory are doing a no cover gig at the Rodeo Bar across town. They've shared the bill w/Yarn a few times and are a very good Americana band in their own right.

Ok, countdown to 11/6 is underway!

I e-mailed Evan Schlansky who writes for Rolling Stone and American Songwriter (good mag if you don't get it). He lives in Queens so I told him to come over and check it out. Double-money back if he doesn't like them + cab fare home! He actually responded that he'd check them out. We'll see. It'd be great to see them get some press in either magazine. AS caters more to their crowd, I would think.

For those that have been to Sullivan Hall before, what are good choices for cheap eats in the area?

One word: Priceline ... and use the "name your own price" option.

Especially last minute like this, you should be able to get a room for about $175. Stay away from Hotel Carver though:

I have heard the Counting Crows cover Pale Blue Eyes many time and I never get tired of it. The Crows never do it as a stand alone cover they useally add it as an alt in the song Goodnight Elisabeth. much like Yarn was adding the Night Train alts in Don't Break My Heart Again. Here is a sample of the Crows version. it's not the best but you get the idea. It starts at 4:45.

Have a good one tonight fellas, wish we could have made it. Instead, I'll be seeing a band here locally that has a banjo and a tuba among many other odd instruments. I think I'm set up for a let down lol.

My 11/6/09 Sullivan Hall Yarn review. I made my way into the city met up with some friends new/old paid $12 and made my way to the stage. When I arrived I was just about the only person in the place. The whole band was not even there yet. I started talking to the guy sitting next to me. He asked me if I was on the boards. I said yes and one thing led to another and it turned out to be tous. It’s about time I finally meet someone from the boards. See I am not as shy as I was last time. Lol My buddy David who is an old school music fan & old dear family friend of mine started talking to the guy sitting next to him. He asked him if he’s ever seen Yarn before. Turns out my buddy was talking to Freddy J.

Then shortly after that Yarn took the stage and began to play and made my head spin. They blew the roof off the place. They played a 2 ½ hour show without any opener. They did 19 songs. Some were short and some were long and some were new and some were old and one was a cover. The lone cover of the night was Pale Blue Eyes. Aside from the tour blog I think that was only the 2nd time it got played. During Music’s only outlaw they jammed till the cows came home. Andrew closed his eyes and took off. During the middle of the jam he was playing his Electric Mandolin so fast that he broke a sting but he kept on playing. Then he jumped off the stage and did a little surgery and fixed his Mandolin. Once it was fixed he jumped back on stage. He did not skip a beat. Later on in the night the band did Don’t Break My Heart Again The song featured the most unbelievable Drum solo I have ever heard. After the small jam everyone moved over to the side to let Freddy J do his thing. He did not disappoint. My arms hurt just watching him. It went on for what seemed like 10 minutes. Then the band joined in and continued to take the song on a journey and jam the be Jesus out of it. Blake then began to sing the song Night Train by GNR before going back into Don’t Break My Heart Again. They closed the Cat & Mouse. The closing number aloud Blake to introduce each member of the band and allow then to have a solo and showcase there stuff. Ricky B the did his groovy thing and then they went down the line. Once they got to Andrew he started playing the Voo Doo Child tease. By that point my head was spinning.

I said a quick hello to the band and headed back home. All and All it was a mind blowing night of music and I can’t wait to do it again. Yarn is hands down the best kept secret in all of the NYC or better yet the world. My buddy and his wife said it was the best concert they have ever seen in a very long time. They were both speechless. So was I. Prier to the show my buddy kept asking me what Yarn sounded like or how I can describe them. After the show he said he couldn’t. He said Yarn sounds like Yarn and nobody else. lol

This show was the first time I got to hear Strikes and Gutters and This whole Zoo live in living color. I am not sure if the show got taped however Andrew set up a hand held video recorder in the back by the sound booth. One last thing compared to the last Yarn show I saw at this venue this one was longer and the sound was spot on and minus the loud talking at certain points during the show which drove me nuts it was Yarn’s night.

Well that's a Reckless review right there earlbny!

Thanks so much for all of it inc the setlist. I haven't seen Feel So Low on any setlists as of late. So glad you got to meet tous and that y'all had such a fun show. Our buddy snflwr said she had a blast too.

...very sad that there wasn't any taper :(

Well, after that review by earlbny, what's to add? Our 6th time seeing them and this was the 2nd best we've seen. Manchester 9/11 was still #1.

However, out of those 6 times, this was the first with the full lineup! What a testament to both the songwriting and the players that they can hit the stage with so many different configurations and still put on a helluva show!

We saw Blake outside before the gig and I politely, um, "hinted" that Pale Blue Eyes would be a great cover that night. Earlbny's right...only the 2nd time played live. Great version but in hindsight too noisy a crowd for that quiet a song. Oh well.

Earlbny...I think you got there at about 7:15 or so? They did Strikes & Gutters at soundcheck just before you got there. After the check, the band comes off stage and is looking for the "Green Room". the owner informs them...um...there isn't one! Jay wasn't too happy about that so they grabbed the few seats ledt where Earlbny had set up shop.

Speaking of whom, I look over a few times during the show and there he is on his phone and I'm thinking, dude...it's Yarn! What's with the phone? Of course, now I see you were keeping track of the set list! Me? Old school...I was using pen and paper!

...and Reckless, your friend snflwr may have been standing with us? Said there were big Yarn fans but never thought to ask if they were on 5Guitars!

So, despite the lack of a taper, y'all will just have to trust us..they brought their "A" game on their home turf!

    YAAAARRRNNNN !!!!!

Thanks Tous. My apologies for the cell phone incident. I finally got with the times and used the notepad feature on my iPod. My phone is not as fancy as my iPod touch. My iPod is accentually the iPohne minus the phone. I figured if I type them up rather then write them down on paper I would be able to read them better. I have the left handed chicken scratch curse.

Funny story about the green room. Classic. lol

That was indeed snflwr standing with us.

They did indeed bring their "A" game on their home turf!

I was not at the Manchester 9/11 gig soforme this was tops.
