Welcome, Guest

  1.
Went to our first outdoor concert this past weekend and was wondering what my NC compatriots are getting into this summer! Lizzy Ross is playing in Saxapahaw in August and the Justin Robins on and the Mary Annettes are playing at American Tobacco in Durham so we'll definitely be at those shows. Also going to see Big Daddy Love at the Oak City 7 series in Raleigh. Hopped, Brouche, badlab, what are y'alls plans? Anyone going to Music on the Mountaintop in August? Awesome line-up - Railroad Earth, Sam Bush, Holy Ghost Tent Revival, Black Lillies among others.

And is anyone going to Gathering of the Vibes to see DangerYarn? Or is it YarnMuffin?! ;P
  2.
Will probably skip the VIBES but I sure would like to catch Floydfest. Might be a dream....we'll see. Yarn, Jackson Browne and DBT sure sounds sweet though.

Will likely hit Strangecreek this weekend but just to catch Max Creek on Saturday.

....then in Sept the Catskills Chill Fest looks pretty cool ~

I love outdoor shows. They allow my omnis to shine. I love the shows in Saxapahaw. I've taped Two Dollar Pistols, Acoustic Manner, John Howie Jr. and the Sweethearts, et al. there.

Right now I plan on hitting a couple of Friday After Five events here in Greensboro. Frontier Ruckus is here June 1. Todd Snider's What The Folk? Festival June 16th in Memphis with Will Kimbrough, Hayes Carll, Elizabeth Cook, Drivin' n Cryin' and Todd Snider & The Burnouts looks like a definite.

Then there's outdoor shows with Yarn in Charlotte and Morganton at the end of June. I think I may ditch Americana Fest for Bristol Rhythm and Roots in September since I'm spending a couple of days in Nashville on the June trip. Probably not much travel other than Memphis and no big festies for me this year.

The guys that own Natty Greene's have done some big anniversary shows outside the brewpub over the years that have included Sam Bush, Cracker, DBT (in the Old Town days). Maybe they will have something big again this year.

Such good music to be had! Hope you get to FloydFest, RC!

Nashville/Memphis sounds like a great trip, Hopped - I love me some Nashville :) Looks like a kickass line-up for Bristol - have a great time! I dig John Howie Jr./Two Dollar Pistols so I found your TDP @ Saxapahaw show on archive - great sound and great recording! Tous, you're a honky tonk guy, right? You might enjoy this one...

Ah man ... y'all are making me homesick again!

I'm going to an outdoor festival next week here in die Schweiz but it's a heavy metal festival (sheepish grin) http://sz.sonisphere.eu/ gonna be a cultural experience for sure!

Hopped: I’m a little jealous, I think we have very similar taste in music.

Amy: I recall maybe Lakewood, NJ in a previous post? My brother is close to there, so I may be at that visiting with him, you going?

I wish I could go to Floydfest... Yarn’s playing on my birthday! RC: I’ve been a Jackson Browne junkie since middle school, the early stuff, and now my daughter is too. Would be so much fun, but alas, not in the cards.

I don’t get out to many festies, just cause my summers are packed with people visiting. I’m out on a farm, my friends tend to make this their vacation place, which I love. If you guys recall, last summer Yarn played kind of local and I couldn’t go cause I had family up... This year Yarn is playing one close by, and I was rejoicing, cause it was in June (the family usually comes in July)... then I got the call that they were coming in June... Could only do two weekends to host, and you guessed it, Yarn local was one of them... lately some of the guys have stayed at my place when they are local, and I told my kids that they would have to go elsewhere if they needed a place to stay.... to that my daughter replied... “but I LIKE it when the Yarn guys come.” Made me remember back to when they first asked to crash at my house and I turned them down cause my kids weren’t comfortable with the idea... I told them they seemed like really nice guys and to that my daughter replied:
“Okay mom, so when I’m a little older and I tell you I met some musicians in a BAR, who sing about alcohol and DRUG USE and strippers and cross dressers, and stabbing people in the chest and RIPPING OUT THEIR HEARTS... when I tell you I am gonna BRING THEM HOME FOR THE NIGHT cause “they SEEM like NICE guys” you’re gonna be OKAY with that?!”
what a difference a year makes!

Cheer up Sue! it’s not forever..make sure you bring your earplugs to the metal fest though!
I volunteered at a start up festy last fall and ended up helping out enough that the guy told me he would try to get Yarn in for me... Volunteer... maybe you could rub elbows with the people who put on the live music stuff there and push for a festy of the music you like, If they’ve got big metal bands coming over, I bet they’ve got a budget... The Europeans still look to America for musical guidance. You’ve definitely got musical taste, start volunteering and meeting people. who knows what could happen?
And yes, my volunteer efforts paid off...
Yarn will be playing 10 minutes down the road from me this fall. :)

Well...just finished up with Merle Fest at the beginning of the month, Might head to Floyd for a day. Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion is a must. $40 for 2.5 days of music. The challenge with BRRR is finding a good cheap hotel near by. Not sure of any other fest we'll hit. Planning a trip to Portland, OR at the end of June for the beer scene so that will tie up some funds. Pretty sure I'll be at the Fun Fourth celebration in Greensboro with Dangermuffin and Big Daddy Love.

Hey, Stoney! Great story about your daughter - that is hilarious! You're a "Problem Mom" ;) I saw another problem mom last weekend at her son's speed metal show at a club here in town. She was front row center, all magenta-haired and rocking out - what a good mommy :) So I'm sad to say that I won't be at the Lakewood show - our NJ trip was moved to a different week :( It was one of those times where I had to remember that saying, "But Yarn is playing that week... " wasn't going to help me out with the great unwashed masses!

Sue, I did think of you when I started this thread and was hoping that the memories of MerleFest might get you through it! Hang in there - we'll be at your official "Welcome home, Sue" Yarn show before you know it!

Have fun at the festies, fellas! That Portland trip sounds like a fun trip, Brouche!

Actually Amy, this "problem mom" is a gray haired wharf rat who always volunteers to be the designated driver. I'm kinda lame. But I sure do love music! Sorry you can't make Lakewood, I'm not sure I will even make it, but I owe my brother a visit and it would be good to get him out of the house. he's a little beaten down, stuck in his musical past, and I bet a good dose of good music could shake him up a little. we'll see. Sue: are you in Swiss land temporarily? You gotta come back to Bethlehem. you can't imagine the changes that have gone on. They've re-claimed Beth Steel and light up the blast furnaces at night. so cool, lots of live music, and the outdoor venue has tons of free concerts. Here's a link: http://levittsteelstacks.org/

...off to The Strangecreek festival in Greenfield, MA for Max Creek. First saw them 32 years ago!

I'm sure that our good friend John D will be there taping all the bands~
  6.
Had a blast......terrific hippie fest and Creek played a fun show. Talked to John D who says he's gonna try to make the Roadhouse gig in a couple of weeks.
  7.
Glad to see you had a good time, RC! Let the summer begin!

And so you guys are going down to the roadhouse? Out on Route 63? ;)

I'm sorry to be the bearer of this sad news, but I thought some of the NC folks would want to know about Matt Brown's passing. There's going to be a memorial concert at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw on Sunday, June 3rd from 4:00 to midnight. Among others, John Howie Jr. will be playing. Benefits from the concert will go to Matt's family.

I will be there for the Matt Brown Memorial show, audio and video taping.

It's sad to lose someone so young.
