Mark it...this will go down as one of the BEST MOO's you will ever hear. Years from now when we have to go to much larger venues to see these guys we'll be having the discussion of the best MOO ever. This one will be named along with a few other dates from their history and the final consensus will be Lincoln Theatre 1/28/12. The six became one juggernaut of a beast on this song!
Bless you, Bryon! Many, many thanks for getting this show uploaded in lightning speed! It's helping ease the withdrawls! :) And I always enjoy the mental refresher of what a kickass time I had! Brouche is right about MOO - grab your seats, folks!
And I know that their producers always talk about Annie, but I think That's Just Fine is one of the "finest" ;) It has a complex composition like MOO and is so friggin catchy, great harmonies, and musically upbeat while still preaching the grim truth of things... LOVE it. Check out the one from this show - killer solos! Looking forward to hearing all the awesomeness again - thanks, Bryon!
Hopped, this recording is excellent. If you like Dead music check this show out. Great music and a fantastic recording. Thanks man, you really captured the spirit of the thing.
Listening to both sources today. I rarely prefer my tapes over other tapers' efforts, but I think I like mine better on this one. I think omnis were a risky choice with a rowdy crowd. Glad I ran cardioids.
I was too busy at work and it looks like I'll be straight out all week but I look forward to hearing these when I get a chance...3rd quarter progress reports due.....play practice.....&^%$%$%$#@#$ dial up at home. You guys don't know the drag.
Quality omnis in a small place with an attentive crowd is the pinnacle, right? those are the ones we really hail. I find overly crowdy shows almost unlistenable though. A taper at the last show raised an eyebrow at me placing shotgun mics 10ft from the main speaker bank. Certainly conventional wisdom suggests that they be used for distance and true, at first, the gun recordings were pretty flat but then Jack got the pre-amp and it made a big difference. I prefer to give up a tad of the dynamics if I can put a chatty crowd in the background. Then, like on 11/17/11 Albany when there's little crowd, it comes out like a friggin' soundboard.
Mine is a bit thinner, but has much less crowd noise, IMO. If I could have the bass of Bryon's recording with the crowd noise of mine, I'd be very happy.
I do prefer the bass response of omnis outdoors or in perfect sounding rooms with no crowd noise (yeah, right). If you spend enough time at taperssection.com, you'll see conventional wisdom get ripped to shreds by some very smart people with decades of experience with microphones and the science of sound. There are a few users over there who almost always post over my head, but the info is good stuff.
The myth of shotgun mics having better 'reach' was one that was debunked recently.
