Alright, so we all agree we love Yarn, and this site rocks as a way to bring us all together. However we need to start thinking of solutions to promoting Yarn in small and big ways. The Jambands.com poll is a great way to start getting their name out, especially if we can push them higher in the ranking order. We're going to need to do more though, and find ways to be consistent about the message we spread.

A few questions and thoughts for consideration, that you all can help answer:

    Audience
    a) What is the average attendance of a Yarn concert?
    b) In an average audience what the is percentage of people new to Yarn? and current Yarn fans?
    c) After a typical show is there a spike in fans on facebook/social media, or mentions of Yarn on the web, etc?
    d) How could we engage this new audience to becoming promoters or continued fans of Yarn?

    Viral/Social Media
    a) How well are the current uses of viral/social media being engaged?
    b) What would be considered short term goals for adding new fans/gaining exposure? And how will we measure them?
    c) Where should we increase Yarn's presence to engage our target?

    Traditional Media & Outlets
    a) How can we promote Yarn in Traditional media outlets? Concert Reviews? Listings for up-coming shows? Radio plugs? Song Requests?
    b) In your community/state who would you identify as an influencer or someone you may commonly look to for new bands/music?
    c) Is there a way you could work on engaging that/those person(s) to positively impacting Yarn?

So it's more than a few questions, and Yarn has made a nice start with their Facebook site, blog, twitter, youtube, and myspace presence. I think if we could collectively brainstorm ideas for promotion and put them in action we should be able to see measurable increases in concert attendance, new fans and word of mouth of their music. Just some food for thought, let me know what you think.

Has anyone made Yarn stickers yet? If so where can I snag one?

I got a pin from the last show, but stickers and/or posters would be nice...

    Hello,

This is Trevor from Yarn. Thank you so much for starting this site - can't tell you how exciting it is for us to have people react the way they have been to our music. Makes us all feel great about what we are doing and keeps us going.

This particular chain has intrigued me because, while we are trying our asses off, it’s a big world out there and in order to build this thing and keep it moving in the right direction we definitely need your help with stuff just like this.

That said, I think we need bigger a national radio presence. We currently do very well with Americana stations, thanks to our man Fred Boening from WXLV in PA, which has been great for us but we need more. We used to be played regularly on XM's X-Country station but once the merger of XM and Sirius happened X-Country was canceled and Sirius's Outlaw Country station took its place - less Yarn. So, our satelite radio presense went by wayside. However, just a couple weeks back my cousin and friend of the band called us and said he heard us on the Sirius/XM station The Loft. I have since listened to the station but no Yarn. Oh well, I never heard us on X-Country either. In fact no one in the band has ever actually heard Yarn on the radio. Please help us change this!

Below are a few links to Sirius/XM stations where I believe Yarn is a fit. If you click on the link it will take you directly to the stations page where you can request YARN. For some stations you can request right there online but for others -The Loft- you need to call in and request.

The Loft: http://www.sirius.com/theloft (Yarn has been heard here before - "Tennessee") Call: 1-877-388-LOFT
Outlaw Country: http://www.sirius.com/outlawcountry (This is the station that replaced XM's X-Country where Yarn was a regular. So far to our knowledge Yarn has never been played here)
    The Spectrum: http://www.sirius.com/thespectrum
    The Bridge: http://www.sirius.com/thebridge
    The Blend: http://www.sirius.com/theblend

Thanks again for all your kind words towards the band and we all hope to see/meet/hear from you soon.

    Hi Trevor and everyone else.

The only station in NY that would not think twice about playing Yarn is wfuv 90.7. or http://www.wfuv.org. They are the PBS of radio. Here is some more info.

    Phone: 718 817-4550 main line | 718 365-8111 membership
Plus: 718 817-4535 WFUV Member Line Giveaways for 'FUV members
Submit CDs to: WFUV Music Department at the address above - Call Wednesdays 5-7pm for feedback
    Who we are:
WFUV is a non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station, licensed to Fordham University for 60 years. Serving nearly 350,000 listeners each week in the New York area and thousands more worldwide on the web, and a leader in contemporary music radio, WFUV offers an eclectic mix of rock, singer-songwriters, blues, world and other music, plus headlines from National Public Radio, local news and sports and Metro Traffic.
The Alternate Side: WFUV launched a music channel online and on HD at 90.7 FM in the New York City area, in December of 2008. It includes a blend of established and emerging NYC-based indie rock, electronica, world, dance and other musical hybrids. The Alternate Side is supported in part by The New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

I have complete faith that Yarn will be around for a very long time. My buddy David was at the original Woodstock has seen everyone from the Dead to Hendryx and everyone in between. He has told me that Yarn is the best band new band he has heard in a very long time. He has yet to see them live except for Jon’s DVD and the shows on archive.org. He said it won’t be long before Yarn is selling out the Garden. Move over Dave Matthews Yarn is the taking over.

I have not submitted a CD for WFUV to spin yet. I guess I better work on that. I watched that same DMB concert and thought the same thing. Don't get me wrong I like DMB especially the old school stuff however it's definitely like Mexican food. lol It was good just not Yarn. It was missing something. Maybe I wanted longer jams or songs to flow in and out each other I don’t know. Yarn is like DMB with an edge. I know I am jumping the gun but I can so see Yarn posters plastered in every frat house across the country and the band playing full sold out shows attracting the same following as the DMB or the Dead. What DMB fan would not fall in love with a song like Music’s only outlaw. There is a part in the studio version of More that reminds me of DMB.
  2.
i wasn't meaning to be pushy about the cd, just askin' ! i'll look in my area to see where i can get it played too.

yes, i agree i don't NOT like david matthews it's just not very moving for me. by the looks of the crowd at that concert at
central park, every frat member within a 50-mile radius of NYC was in attendance, not that there's anything wrong with that . . .

alright guys, I'm not a huge fan of the greek life/ dmb obsessed kids either, BUT I do believe that the college scene may be a place for Yarn to pick up steam... I'm still casting onto this piece of work, but I would almost guarantee decent if not excellent turnout at colleges like Appalachian State, UNC-Asheville and Western Carolina. I've got great friends going to all three schools and I personally would travel to Asheville and Cullowhee to see these guys!

I can imagine that being on tour can get expensive, but I really feel like more southbound journeys would help the cause. I've sent requests to WNCW based out of Spindale NC,also public radio, but since I work in a dungeon with no music I'm not sure if they've played anything between 9 and 5... Maybe I'll try the college radio station when I'm back up to Boone.

Regardless, Yarn music proliferation is a must!

It's all good. Dave Matthews got way to commercial for my taste. Yarn has that homegrown organic sound. When I listen to Yarn I feel the music. While I think DMB is better then most commercial music I don’t feel it like I do with Yarn. That central park show was frat central indeed. If you want to make a quick $ go to a DMB concert and pick up the beer bottles in the parking lot and recycle them. I love bands like Yarn who make there own brand of music regardless of it’s popular or not. It’s not about writing singles it’s about making the music that’s in your heart.

I have been looking for stickers as well. I'd gladly sport one on my car! I have been burning Yarn CDs like crazy and sending them out to friends that have never heard them before. I am kind of a groupie these days :) I am really close with a blue grass band here in Raleigh that plays ALL the time, and get huge crowds. Maybe you could get billed with them here. as far as promotional ideas ...
.....playing at festivals in front of a big crowd of people who all love different music styles is the best
.......in 1994 Jerry Garcia got little known Dave Matthews Band to open for them and from then on the band just took off....i reckon that if bands like Robert Earl Keen and The Avett Brothers can open for DMB then Yarn would been awesome'......
I know the more country flavour of Yarn would'nt sit with the college crowd (who cares) but the folks who love Daves early tunes and his great guitar playing and songwriting would love Yarn

I find that Yarn makes Country music for people that don’t like country music. If the Dead helped DMB get there start then I can so see the DMB helping Yarn get there start. I can also see the DMB college crowd grooving to Music’s only Outlaw. I find that fans of so called Jambands are very open when it comes to music and will not be afraid to listen to all sorts of stuff. While I find that Yarn has there own signature sound they have hints of the Dead and the DMB amongst others sounds and influences in them. Even my little cousins and various family members have come over to m house and instantly started dancing to Yarn and they only listen to top 40 stuff.

These are great ideas, it was nice to come back from spending some time in the great mud of Tennessee to see this discussion take off. I'll take a look at the radio stations and also see who I can hit up in that area of the media. As for the stickers, I'll work on them shortly, between a bit of creative time off and overload in my shop time has been hard to come by.

The college crowd would certainly be one to engage, as they're full of potential influencers, and of course word-of-mouth potential is endless. A festival booking or two would be nice as well, I saw many very small bands, similar to Yarn instantly attract a crowd of a couple hundred or more at side tents down at Bonnaroo this year. I'll be very interested to see how they can take advantage of that new base. As for your radio suggestion, it would be nice to create a list of stations and areas you want to work on penetrating. If we had a list of stations, fans could call in and make a request, regardless of location, with the hope of slowly building traction for a local audience, just like your suggestions for Sirius/XM.

Aside from WFUV 90.7 in NYC the only commercial rock station left in NYC is 101.9 WRXP. Matt Pinfield is the morning show host. According to them it’s where new music alternative and classic rock mix. They play a ton of local bands as part of there local licks promotion. While I have yet to hear any band on WRXP that sounds like Yarn it’s worth a try. WFUV on the other hand is a perfect match. I can easily see them playing at Bonnaroo. So how was the festival this year? I heard Phish and Springsteen did a few songs together?
  3.
earlbny I agree, WFUV would be a perfect fit for Yarn. Maybe post a request to play them on WFUV's Facebook page?

i believe you can submit show reviews. Maybe if we flood them with a bunch of reviews of newer shows with pics they will put it on up on the site. they already had a nice paragraph about YARN in the Floydfest review and as a daily reader of the site i can tell you that if they really like a band they will fluff the shit out of them (album reviews, updates of shows and even more show reviews done by their staff). i do not pride myself on being a great writer but i think if i dont belly up to the bar too much at the next NYC show, ill try to get a nice write up.

    What about:
    1) Taking out a banner ad on the No Depression site at http://www.nodepression.com/ with a link through to an offer to download that promo CD mentioned in exchange to be added to a Yarn e-mail list?
    2) Gig at SXSW 2010 ?
    3) Getting a small feature in Paste? (one of the few remaining print music magazines!)

Ok, this is from Kyla at No Depression:

Banner ads are very affordable. They start at $200 and I recommend a $300-$400 buy to get adequate coverage. We currently have over 52,000 unique visitors to the site each month, and deliver just over 200,000 page views per month. Our weekly newsletter goes out to 11,928 email addresses every Tuesday.

CPM's for banner ads are $5 for the mini skyscraper, $7 for the skyscraper and $9 for the leaderboard. The newsletter is an additional $100.

For $400 they could have the newsletter and a little over 40,000 page views of the skyscraper.

Online advertising is a great value.

How's this for Promotion? Yesterday I went into the city to catch the Saturday Night Rebel Rocker Traveling Circus and Medicine Show in Central Park. It’s the name of the Counting Crows 2009 summer tour. It’s a big circus. Anyway I wore my chocolate Yarn shirt to the show. I got a lot of looks from people and even had people come up to me and ask me who or what Yarn is. After the show I tried to find Adam Duritz the lead sing of the Crows but he was nowhere to be found. So instead I gave a Jim the Crows drummer a copy of Yarns 2 studio albums. I told him that I did not want to take a photo with him or get an autograph instead I wanted to give him the gift of music. Who doesn’t love music? I told him that for all he does for me making music it’s the least I could do for him. I was such a big pimp last night. I told everyone I came in contact with about Yarn and there upcoming NYC gig. I am just doing my part to help spread the word. I wonder if he will listen to the albums or if they will get tossed in a box or even worse thrown out.
  5.
C'mon earlbny, you're just pining for a Yarn/Crows double bill!
  6.
NICE job! I do this kind of stuff too, but in Texas at Americana shows I go to! I've actually given away a few CD's to other artists as well, and have heard back from one guy, Colin Gilmore, he's Jimmie Dale Gilmore's son if you know who he is, and he loves them. Not sure where that will get them in Texas, but hey, at least that's one more person that knows.

Speaking of the Yarn NYC show, I can't wait for it!

I am not going to lie to all of you. Of course I want to see a Yarn/Crows double bill. Better yet would be if Ryan came out of hibernation and took Yarn on the road. The chances of those 2 scenarios happening are as slim as me winning the lotto. In reality all I truly want is for Yarn to have official made it. I know with there talent and drive and constant playing/making music it will happen.

What a sigh of relief? You scared me for a minute there. Ryan is the shit as is Yarn. Just as long as Yarn does not open up for Swift or the Jonas Brothers or Brittney Spears or Tim McGraw or some crappy artist like that. I am good. I see no sign of Yarn selling out anytime soon. I work for a small newspaper (30,000 circulation) here in New London, CT and am pushing our music writer to do a small story on Yarn before their 10/3 show in town. He's liked what he's heard from them (gave him a couple live shows and Empty Pockets) and *possibly* wants to do a short interview.

Kasey Anderson is "giving away" 4-song samplers to people that e-mail their requests in. They get a download link and are free to burn and share.

    Details here:
    http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=7139501&blogId=525515885

Seems like a good idea for Blake & Co. to get the word out more !
  9.
    hi all
so far what i'm reading is great...we're a spirited collective yarn sort and i couldn't agree more...spread the love and joy of music...it's one of my favorite past times.

here are some of my ideas:
share links on your facebook at least once a week.

share links of websites you frequent (like RAA)
street team....make and distribute posters/flyers/buttons etc. @ restaurants, coffee shops, your brewery, bars, bookstores, university campuses...et al

i have a button machine and would be willing to foot the bill to make buttons and send them John's way to distribute around at the shows (for the fans and for those who don't know about Yarn)

word of mouth is priceless and even just being a link whore is fine...i whore out the shit i love all the time. when you love something it has to be shared. sure my wife is about sick of me playing yarn to no end...and lately i can't stop blaring "25 years" on the speakers but you know what...it's all worth it in the name of great music.

so get out there and spread the love.

john, if you want pm on raa to set up something up with buttons...no strings attached...of course any ideas or pictures to be used for the Yarn buttons would a big help!

    thanks all!!!
  10.
Hey balv, sorry I missed this. I know that Yarn had some buttons for some show....Blake offers them on a recording but I never saw any of them. What size does your machine make? I don't do buttons any more...too Neal Casalish? ;) but maybe some folks would dig it.

Stoked to hear that you've caught onto Yarn. Man I wish you could get to a show. I'm seriously spoiled getting to see them pretty much once a month or so. Good luck converting wifey~
  11.
    reckless:
the buttons are 1.25" ....about the perfect size...and easy to distribute.

the wife likes yarn...cause she grew up listening to her dad slap and claw the banjo....she loves bluegrass...so i made her a mix of yarn for the car and she digs it....i just have to learn to listen in moderation otherwise i'll burn her out like i did ryan adams. :(

but getting back to promotion.....i'm wanting to make a 5 song sampler of Yarn's music and put their website on the disc and title it and all that.....and hand it out to local breweries (my friend owns/runs one here in town) and maybe get them on the speakers at local breweries and bars? AND hand out some buttons with it. do you think that would be a bad call? bad idea?
  12.
No, I think it would be a great idea. Pretty sure the band would support such an effort.

Tough to par things down to 5 but prolly

    No Future Together
    Christopher Street
    Don't Break My Heart Again
    An Angel In Woodstock
    Bad Bad Man

.....course it hardly matters what 5 songs does it?
  13.
    im thinking bad, bad, man
    25 years
    don't break my heart again
    listen up sweetheard
    An Angel In Woodstock....

but no reason it can't be a 6 song sampler!!!!!! :)

Over the weekend I went to the supermarket to buy some stuff for the week. Anyway I was wearing my Yarn shirt and had my iPod on. After I checked out and made my way back to my car I immediately turned my stereo up to 11 rolled down my window and started to load up my car with all my groceries. Normally all the black people that hang out in the parking lot give me weird looks however not this weekend. Some older white guy in a BMW happened to be parked next to me. He stopped me and asked who I was listening to. At the time I was listening to Take Me out Misery. He said he could not believe his ears. He then asked me if they were a Blues band. I guess TMOM has a Blues kind of a feel to it. I said they are an everything kind of band. They do it all. They are not just a Country band or a Rock band or a Bluegrass band. They take a lot of different elements and mix them all up in a blender and make them sound like Yarn. He asked me lots of other questions. We had a good 2 minute conversation about Yarn. I gave him some info about the band and then he drove off into the sunset.

    Great story!

My sister-in-law saw them for the first time at the last Manchester, CT show. Now, she's not a big music fan to begin with so they left after the 1st set.

I asked her what she thought and her response was "I can't figure out what kind of music it is!" I leaned over and said "it's called good".

    Oh well, can't convert everyone!

I forgot to mention that when I told this dude the band name he said "Like a Ball of Yarn" I then said yes and pointed to my shirt.

At least you tried Tous. I don't know how anyone can not like Music. None of FB music friends care about Yarn. However I did convince 1 of them to see Yarn. I kept begging him to check them out. He finally said yes. I think he did that just so I would shut up. He warned me that he hates long songs that go on and on. I said while Yarn does plenty of that you will not be bored. Yarn is different. He’s going to the Beacon NY show.

I finally did it. I saw the thing Yarn posted about getting Yarn on the radio. I looked over the list and saw that www.wfuv.org was not on the list. So I emailed the band to find out what the deal was. FUV is the only station in NYC that would think twice about playing Yarn. I got an email back saying that they already send them a copy of the new record and thanking me for my support. I did a search of the wfuv play list have yet to get any hits. Today while I was in my car I heard the morning DJ Claudia say that they were playing songs about NY in honor of the 59th street Bridge. She then played a cool song called in the city by this guy named Milton. She went on to say how she loves that he gave a shout out to Lou Reed and that if anyone has any suggestions about NY songs just to email them. So that was my last straw. I wrote to Claudia and the station and told them all about Yarn and how they have to start playing them. I even mention how NYC found name drops Lou Reed as well. Now I am waiting to see if they email me back and start playing some Yarn on the radio.

good for you earlbny.....not sure why people have such a damn hard time getting on board with awesome mutherfucking music.

this weekend i'm making a mix for a couple and will give them a yarn poster too so they can help spread the good word...the gal is from Schenectady and it's only right she gets her ears onto these guys.

I live in Raleigh, NC and I would like to share with you my promotional idea. This is something I started almost two years ago, and I'd like to think it worked... although this can't be proven.

It all started when a friend and I parked our car behind another car with a bumper sticker that read "my grass is blue". Now, I know Yarn isn't exactly bluegrass, but I've found those who enjoy a good earful of bluegrass every now and then also seem to enjoy a good earful of yarn. So, with a box of yarn cds sitting between my feet I said "Ya know what they would like... they would like to come out to their car in the morning a find a Yard CD on their windshield"

So, I wrote them a little note (I can't remember what it said) and I put a free copy of one of the CDs on their window.

I don't know what happened after that. I'm gonna say they probably showed up at the next show. Yeah, that's what I'm gonna say.

    Anywho... Yarn Bombing was born!!!

I don't know. That's just my bright idea. Yarn as a rather nice following here now. I'm not gonna say that I or my Yarn Bombing had anything to do with it... but late at night when I'm all snug in my bed, I sure like to think it. :)

With the street team recently taking on the name Yarmy.... I think it's appropriate that the Yarmy drops Yarn Bombs.

    That's all.
    Happy day!!

    Welcome Dawn~

...and I drop Yarn bombs all the time. I recently handed out several copies of a live show at the Strangecreek fest the guys played. Seriously, I have given out spindles worth of Yarn shows. It's a great idea to keep a few extras in the glove box to miracle folks who have like-minded stickers on their cars.

I have beers with a few friends every Sunday evening in a buddy's garage. I usually bring whatever I've recorded that week for our listening pleasure. Now everyone just wants to listen to Yarn from Catawba Valley Brewing. I should have a pretty good contingent in tow for the NC run in July. I could easily drop a few Yarn bombs around town.

Timely thread...just gave copies of 'Come On In' to two local DJ's. Both have shows at college stations. Yarn would fit right in with the music they play. Hopefully they'll like it enough to give some airplay. In fact one said he'd heard of them and wanted to check them out. We were at his place for a house concert by Cary Hudson of Blue Mountain fame.

The morning DJ of a popular radio show just moved in next door to me. Just last weekend she lured me in with a bottle of wine and asked if I would dog sit for her while she went to the beach. I agreed and we started talking about live music in the area. I stopped mid convo, went to my place to grab some yarn cds and now she's on board for the next show in Raleigh. She's always looking for folks to come on the show and talk up their music. She has mucho connections. She was on the cover of the Rolling Stone. She's the most fascinating woman I've ever met... and now, she's been Yarn Bombed!
