Yup, we're just about on our way. Don't care about the weather...it's YAAAARRRNNNN!!! Buddy of mine will be seeing them for the first time. Very interested to see what he thinks. He's also a taper so hopefully we get a decent sounding recording. I'll post the setlist as well.
Dammit, I thought so hard about making the trek out to this one but work has to come first. Got the no-school call this morning so now I'm wishing I had gone ;(
Well, we stayed overnight in Somerville. Well worth the drive and the Priceline hotel room.
Johnny D's is out there in the suburbs of Boston and, unless you're *real* familiar with the area, is a bear to find. Once there, we had a great time. Opener was some chick singer-songwriter who had a lousy voice, below-average guitarists accompanying her, muddled sound and trite lyrics. Oh, I almost forgot the fast-food rolls around her bared belly.
Yeah, um...not so much.
That set the stage for Yarn. The bar was not set very high so they killed, once again. Unfortunately, the tables were only about 3/4 filled. If you haven't been there, it's set-up almost like a dinner theatre with a dance floor right in front. Boston has always been a tough draw for them and last night was no different. Those that were there sure enjoyed them but I thought there'd be more of a crowd since they played here about 3 months ago. There was an Americana fest going on elsewhere around Boston so maybe that kept the crowd down...and weather wasn't great either.
Anyway, set list:
Set 1
Down On Your Luck Bad Bad Man Angel Alone on the Weekend NYC Found Girl on the Side Break My Heart Again
Set 2
Lies I've Told Christopher St. Take Me Out Misery Let's Get Dark Empty Pockets Roadhouse 5 Guitars (shout-out request for yours truly) Cat & Mouse Final Bow
Blake was in much better spirits than last time I saw him (Sully's Pub). A lot of bantering and he was enjoying himself. Anyone wants to get a rise out of him, ask him about his New Years Eve in Boston escalator story from when he was much younger. Funny stuff.
Let's see, other tidbits:
Jay is not coming back. Chris is only here through Saturday but they have a new guy in the wings. Moved from England to NYC (opposite of Chris). They seem real pleased to have him.
Trevor was missing. He'll be there Sat. night at Sullivan Hall though.
New album is done, mixed and set to go. 13 tracks including a brand new one (Rickey B smiling and saying it's an awesome song)
Finally, my buddy was seeing them for the first time. He's a big Stones, Drive-By Truckers, Lucero, etc. fan. 4 songs in, he's calling and texting friends saying 'you've got to see this band'! Between sets, he's up buying discs and talkin' gear with Andrew, Yup, another fan. He said next time they're in town, he's bringing at least 15 people out to see them.
Oh..and yes, he taped with a line into the board. Stay tuned.
Thanks Tous! great review and info. I can't wait to go Saturday night in NYC! Wish I could go tonight, but my Dad, brother, brother_in-law, sister and a few friends are heading up. Bad weather and all. The Iron Horse is a great place to see a show. Worth their drive for sure....
